This analysis provides an overview about the Agreement establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and to which extend environmental, especially biodiversity-related, issues are dealt with under the AfCFTA. The purpose is to trigger a discussion within the African Union Commission, including other relevant AU institutions and Member States, as well as trade and biodiversity experts evaluating the current status and necessary actions to develop biodiversity- friendly standards and practices in the implementation of the AfCFTA. The direct AUC partners are: • Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment (DARBE); partner of the ABS Initiative • Department of Economic Development, Tourism, Trade, Industry, Mining (DETTIM), partner of the AfCFTA Project
